Flower Gardening Tips

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Tim Birch Flower gardens are simple to install and easy to care for. They do, however, require a basic understanding of the natural conditions of your garden as well as the specific needs of the individual flowers. Different flowers have different requirements. Annuals, for example, live for only one season, require a bit more maintenance than perennials and, since they die after the first hard frost, need be replanted each year. Perennials, on the other hand, flower for a period each year and grow larger each season. They die back to the ground in the winter but reemerge the following spring. Determine which flowers do well in your climate and research their sun and soil requirements. Some flowers thrive in the sun while other prefer a little shade. Also, though most plants prefer organic, nutrient rich soil, some will do actually do better in well drained sandy soil. Perennials bloom either early in the spring, during the middle of summer or late in the summer and into autumn. To achieve a constant bloom throughout the season, plant many different species. Iris, bleeding heart and a variety of bulbs are notable early bloomers. Daylily and hosta bloom in the middle of summer while aster and sedum autumn joy are perfect for late season color. Annuals bloom continuously from spring right through the fall up until the first frost. A mixture of annuals and perennials in the garden ensures a colorful garden from spring until fall. Plan a garden which compliments your house and overall landscape. For instance, mixing different heights, colors, and varieties of flowers together in a cottage garden style will give your garden a rustic look which is quite appropriate for a country setting. If you want a more formal feel, consider a rectangular garden with a symmetrical layout. Planting your annuals and perennials is easy. After you have prepared your garden by tilling the soil and adding some compost and peat moss, arrange your flowers in the new bed according to a design drawn out before hand. Make sure you like the layout and that the plants are adequately spaced. To plant, simply dig a hole about twice the size of the plants root system and place the flower in the hole then back fill the hole with the some soil, tamp it down and water. All plants, including perennials and annuals, should be planted at the level of the finish grade of your garden. In you want a low maintenance flower garden, limit your annuals and plant a variety of perennials. Perennials, though quite adaptable to a number of garden conditions, can benefit from an early spring feeding. Slow release fertilizer is very effective in the flower garden as it provides nutrients over the course of an entire season. Another way to provide nutrients to your flowers is to spread a layer of organic compost on the garden each spring. Flower gardening is very rewarding. Simply decide what flowers you like, plant them and be sure they receive the proper care. Flower gardening gives people excellent reason to spend some outdoors and test out their green thumb. Fake a Tan with Sunless Tanning Lotion

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Lorene Radenz A great tan is associated with health and beauty. While a bronze look is desirable, especially in the summer or on holiday — we all know the dangers of the sun’s UV rays. Is a temporary tan worth the permanent sun damage, wrinkles, and skin cancer risk? Absolutely not! You can save time and avoid these risks entirely with sunless tanning lotion. Today’s self-tanners give you a deep golden tan, not the orange look of years ago. Many new self tanning lotions are tinted and these are the ones I recommend. Not only do they give you an initial tan, you’re more likely to apply the lotion evenly and avoid streaking. First, take a shower or bath and exfoliate your skin. Pay special attention to your elbows, knees and any other rough spots. These areas will soak up the self tanning lotion and turn darker so you need to get rid of any dead skin. Pat yourself dry and pin your hair up. Apply regular body or hand lotion to the dry spots you exfoliated. Allow yourself several minutes to completely dry. You may choose to wear thin gloves to put on the self tanning lotion and avoid getting it on your hands, but applying it with your bare hands will probably result in a more even application. It’s your choice. Start applying the lotion from the bottom - up, bracing your foot on a chair or stool. Rub in lightly, you can always go back later and apply a second time. Don’t forget the areas that would tan naturally in the sun, the back of your legs, knees, arms, and neck. When applying to your face, remember to smooth it on your eyelids and into your hairline — avoiding your eyes and hair. For people with sensitive skin, there are self tanning lotions formulated specifically for your face and will result in a more natural look. If you will be wearing your hair up, don’t forget to apply the self tanner on the back of your neck, and behind your ears to look more natural. When you’re finished, wash your hands thoroughly if you chose not to wear gloves, so your palms don’t turn an unnatural color. Use a hand towel to dry them completely. Before the lotion dries, it’s more likely to tan what you’re wearing too, so let yourself dry and put on some loose clothing. If you’re going to be sitting on a cloth chair or couch, sit on a towel to avoid staining. For a deep, dark tan before a special occasion, apply self tanning lotion before bed, and again in the morning. Before you go out, check yourself in the mirror for any streaks and correct them with a damp paper towel. Apply bronzing powder to your face and shoulders for a finishing touch, and hit the town! DVD for Builders - 4 Principles for Using DVD’s in Trade Shows

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Joe Large Keep these four principles in mind when using video in a trade show. If you follow these rules you will impress your visitors and have the best opportunity to convert prospects into clients. 1) Make sure that your DVD/video loops to your main action or message every 25-30 seconds. For example, if you have in-house designer that helps your clients, show that action occurring every 25-30 seconds. You want people walking the aisles to quickly see what benefit sets you apart. You do not have a lot of time, they are moving targets. You want that point to come up in your video quickly and consistently. 2) Use graphics, images extensively. Do not use your talking head to tell how great your companys products and services can be. Its boring and your video will look like big brother preaching the gospel to the people in the aisle. It looks tacky and amateurish, dont do it. Produce your video with the thought of drawing visitors in for your unique benefit. 3) Make sure your monitor is big enough. Your message is not only for the booth but will be projected out into the aisles of the show in that big convention center. While you dont want the monitor to take over the booth, I would look at 20 at least. 4) Be sure (yes I know Im tooting my own horn) to have DVD done well. Have editing and graphics done by a professional. Video cameras and equipment is inexpensive enough to get the images economically, just make sure all the editing and rendering is done by a professional. If not youre going to show a whole big room full of potential clients youre an amateur and you are cheap. There is one final strategy to keep in mind. Your video needs to paint the big picture and show one unique benefit. Don’t try to have all the answers in your video and/or printed materials. Your goal is to start a dialogue with as many qualified visitors as possible. People that have an interest will want to ask questions. That is the first level of qualification, they are indeed interested. Giving all the answers prematurely takes away your chance at dialogue with visitors that may turn into clients. Relax, have fun and listen. Keep the dialogue going. Remember the video gives a message but you must explain and be relevant. That’s the key in relationship selling for builders. Enjoy the show. Patenting of Software Programmes

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Mathews Verghese Patent is one of the types of Intellectual Property rights which exist. It grants protection of the patented article to the inventor for a certain period of time. Thus monopoly of production of that invention lies with the patent holder. The purpose of this system is to encourage inventions by promoting their protection and utilization. Under the system Patents ensure property rights for the invention for which patent have been granted. Most of the jurisprudence relating to software patents emanates from the United States which is considered as the cradle of software patents. It began with the landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in Diamond v. Diehr which ordered the patent office to grant patent on an invention even though a computer software was utilized in it. In a later decision of In Re Alapat No 92-1381(Fed. Cir. July 29,1994) clarified the position further by allowing the patenting of inventions that can be implemented in either hardware or software, provided the patent application establishes the invention as something more than a mere mathematical formula. The first software patent ever granted is probably a patent for a computer having a slow and quick access storage, when programmed to solve a linear programming problem by an iterative algorithm. applied for in 1962 by British Petroleum Company. The Patent relates to solving simultaneous linear equations. In recent times a raging controversy has been there in India as to whether software programmes should be granted Patent Protection or not. A software Patent is generally defined as a patent that protects some programming technique. Software programmes are granted copyright protection. This has been expressly mentioned in section 2(ffc) of the Indian Copyright Act, 1957. By the Patents (Amendment) Ordinance, 2004 section 3(k) was to be introduced. This section stated (k) a computer programme per se other than its technical application to industry or a combination with hardware. On bare reading of the abovementioned section one comes to the obvious conclusion that computer programmes were been given patent protection. But on close perusal of the section it is clearly seen that computer programmes per se would not be given protection. Thus protection could only be availed of when a computer programme was combined with some hardware as well. But a controversy nevertheless existed and came to an end only when the section in question was removed by the Patent Amendment Act, 2005. Now there are two sides to this problem. On one side allowing Patent protection over any kind of computation seriously harms and hampers the creativity, productivity and freedom of software developers while writing code. The key advantage in using computer programs is that logic can be re-written without rewriting or physically modifying hardware. Thus it is easy to re-write, copy, improve and modify computer programs. A good example of such use is the Operating system called Linux. There are numerous types of Linux like Red Hat Linux, Sussex Linux to name a few. These have been developed due to the additions and subtractions of codes to the original programme. Software is complicated. It is a large computer programme and cannot be understood by any one person. Simply by way of its complexity it is dependent on a vast range of software technologies. A major computer code can comprise anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million lines of code. Software Technology evolves rapidly. It is thus difficult or impossible to produce new products in the software industry without violating numerous patents. A good example is when the patenting of data exchange standards forced another programming group to introduce an alternate format. PNG format was introduced to avoid the GIF patent problems and the Ogg Vorbis format was introduced to avoid the MP3 patent problems. Finally obtaining patent protection for any invention including software is relatively expensive. On the other side there are high costs involved in the research and development of software which has been one of the reasons of the increasing number of patent applications for software. Copyright law protects only the expression of an idea, while patent law protects the underlying idea as well provided the idea is not so fundamental that it is not within the categories of patentable subject matter. Furthermore software products are mass marketed without a signed license agreement, the strong protection provided by patent laws is increasingly important. Finally an issued patent for software may prevent all others from utilizing a certain algorithm without permission, or may prevent others from creating software programs that perform a function in a certain way. In conclusion Patents and Copyrights form complementary means for protecting software innovations. Patents cover the underlying methodologies embodied in a given piece of software on the function that the software is intended to serve independent of the particular language or code that the software is written in. Copyrights protect against the direct copying of some or all of a particular version of a given piece of software, but do not prevent other authors from writing their own embodiments of the underlying methodologies. India has progressed in leaps and bounds in the field of Intellectual Property Rights. But time is still required to let the country reach a stage when the patenting of software is acceptable. Fly Fishing - I Know Knot What I Do

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Richard Chapo When it comes to fly fishing, tying a knot is not the most glamorous of subjects. Without a knot, however, youll not be snatching the Muskie of your dreams. Fly Fishing Knots First thing first, we need to get the lingo down since we wont be using illustrations in this article. Three basic terms will cover practically any aspect of the knot tying process. Tag end refers to the last ten inches of so of line you are holding in your hand, to wit, the pointy part you will be pushing through and wrapping around things. Standing end refers to the rest of the line. Yes, very complicated and difficult to understand. Wrap refers to the action wherein you move the tag end of the line one full revolution around the standing end. The wrap can also be called a turn, but you have the general idea. As with practically anything in fly fishing, there are an infinite number of variations to knots. Mysterious variations include the Steroidius Double Flip [good for catching professional athlete fish], the Marigold Hammer [good for catching the neighbors plants while practicing in your back yard] and the Wifeous Annoyous [a complex knot that gets you in trouble with the wife since youre supposed to be painting the garage], but you probably start with the Aarrgg, Dammit knot common to beginners. Fishermans Knot Other than tying your shoes, the easiest knot to learn is the fishermans knot. Get your hook in one hand and tag end in the other. And a one and a two 1. As you proceed, keep everything slack. We will be passing the tag end through loops we create. DO NOT tighten anything until told to! 2. Pull the tag end through the eye of the hook. 3. Bend the tag end back to the standing end and wrap four or five times. Make sure you do not tighten the wrap. [You should now have a closed loop through the hook.] 4. Take your tag end and push it through the loop formed by the wrap. Do not push it through the hook eye, just the bigger loop of line. 5. You will have just created another loop and should pass the tag end through again. 6. Slowly pull on the hook and stag end until the knot is tight. Watch those fingers. Congratulations! If youve tied the perfect knot, it is time to hit local fishing spot. If youve made a mess of it, try again. Either way, you get to avoid painting the garage. Cell Phone Features

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Roberto_Sedycias]Roberto Sedycias It’s not a 21st century gadget. It was developed in 1947 in the form of a car mobile phone. The concept of cellular phone (telefone celular) was produced by Bell Laboratories with the permission of FCC (Federal Communication Commission), and had everything to do with broadcasting and sending a radio or television message out over the airwaves. But there was a scientist, who gave a new shape to the same device. Dr Martin Cooper, a former general manager in Motorola, made the first call on a portable cell phone back in 1973. The first ever cell phone (telefone celular) was very large and bulky. It almost looked like a radio frequency device. The weight of Motorola’s first cell phone was 2 pounds. But now the structure of cell phones has evolved to match the style and comfort of the user. They have shrunk drastically both in size and weight. It is easy to tailor cell phones by choosing its features and functions for ones comfort. There are phone covers that change the face and design of the device. Various accessories are available such as car chargers, belt clips, phone covers, data cables and etc. Cell phone (telefone celular) emerged as a device of luxury, but in the fast growing technical world, it plays a much bigger and important role. You can get wireless Internet service through your cell phone, with web and email capability. A cell phone with a mini web browser can help retrieve web emails and chat, etc., while you are on the move. A special kind of browser is used for surfing the net on a small cell phone screen. If internet use is a must, make sure that when buying a cell phone you make the choice for graphic browser capability instead of a text-based browser. Also, if you think you will browse the wireless Internet often, you may want to consider buying a cell phone with a larger than average display size. There are International websites that allow sending mails, without having a computer. All you need is a basic GPRS enabled mobile phone and you can access your mail on your cell phone (telefone celular) anytime and anywhere. It is no wonder that cell phones have become a bed-side essential for us today, like a bottle of water that we may need any time. It is no longer a device of entertainment. From local weather forecast in the morning to your loved ones good night messages, it keeps you connected all the time. With cell phones (telefone celular) becoming a device with all the modern technology, its theft is growing across the world. In a survey it was found that in the UK a cell phone is stolen every three minutes. In the United States, the statistics are very similar too. By keeping a note on the IMES identification that each phone has, you can trace a phone, though it’s a tedious process. The IMES code is individual to each cell phone, when you lose your phone, you can refer the code to your network provider as well as handset provider and trace back the cell phone, or at least block the applications in the phone. The person who stole the cell phone can’t use it after the IMES code is blocked. Cell phones (telefone celular) have definitely become a very popular consumer electronic product. Not just for plain conversation, but for lots of other purposes. With the availability of internet connection, cell phone as broaden even more its options of uses. Not to mention GPS capability, a life saver for tracking cell phone users who are in emergency situations. Whether for personal or professional purposes, people just cant seem to live without cell phone (telefone celular). A luxury item in the early days, now it is a must have item at all times.
