Fitness - It’s A Family Affair

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Sue DeFiore OK, you are eating healthier meals and now you want to get your family to exercise together. First, sit down and talk about the different things you all like to do. Give everyone a turn to come up with a weeks worth of activities. Numerous studies have shown that if you exercise for 30 consecutive days it becomes a habit. So once you all get past the first month it will become routine and part of your lifestyle. Just remember to keep it fun and give everyone a chance to participate in coming up with different things to do. Everyone wants to give input, no one likes to be told over and over what to do! One of my favorites is dancing. Everyone gets to pick their favorite music and you all get to dance to it. It is also fun for the younger generation to watch the older one dance. Another favorite of mine is swimming. If you have a YMCA, community center, or if your school is lucky enough to have a pool see if you can get some swim time in. You can also get creative here also with different types of swimming, races, or water ballet. Another option if you have the pool to yourself is pool volleyball! One great game the whole family can play is Twister, plus it has the added advantage of stretching all those muscles. Be sure you play enough games to get those muscles warmed up (4-8 games). Since weather is one of the main reasons why many around the country dont get outside to walk, try going to the Mall. Walk at a nice brisk pace for at least 20-30 minutes or less if you feel you are getting short of breath. Then since you are there reward yourself with some window shopping. If the mall isnt your thing, pick another indoor facility where you can do some brisk walking. Many who walk keep track of their steps with pedometers. They are inexpensive and people love the feedback of how many steps they did in a day. Get one for everyone in your family and see who walks the most steps in a week. Whoever wins gets to decide on the menu for a week, doesnt have to do any clean up or chores. Or you could have prizes you give away. Since I am into weight training and especially enjoy circuit training, you could try something like circuit training in your home. You could start with stretching; and then move to running up and down the stairs; then some floor exercises, such as sit ups, side bends, push ups. If you have some type of equipment, like a treadmill, bicycle, Gazelle or something along these lines you could also add that into the circuit. Do each activity for a couple of minutes or one repetition and then move to the next activity or station. You could also place each activity in a different room and walk briskly or jog to each station. Get those creative juices flowing and I am sure in no time you can come up with a whole bunch of other fun activities. Enjoy! Punta Cana Weddings: Definitely Worth a Look

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Nancy Koluzs If white pristine beaches and picturesque sunsets is your definition of romance then perhaps consider having your dream wedding in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. There are so many dimensions to planning a wedding with many details and stressful decisions to be made. Some couples may welcome the traditional methods to wedding planning however; more and more couples have decided to veer away from the more conventional wedding ceremonies and have decided to include the sun, sand and Island hospitality as a means to starting a new chapter in their lives as husband and wife. For many decades several resorts in Punta Cana have helped couples plan and customize their dream wedding. Ask to consult with their wedding event planner. They will be glad to contribute their expertise towards making your wedding day as memorable and romantic as can be. Most resorts will offer a free wedding service if the future bride and groom book a one week stay at their resort, however the couple will be responsible for the cost of their wedding license. Clearly there are many advantages to having a Caribbean, paradise wedding. For starters there is the obvious; the location. Secondly, couples can begin their life together without the enormous debt most weddings leave behind. There is less planning involved. Youre almost guaranteed a beautiful day with a breath taking sunset to end the night. Youre able to share this event with the people that really matter in your lives (not your Aunt Ethel who youve never met before!) and lastly, youve already arrived at your Honeymoon destination. Although getting married in Punta Cana may not involve as much planning as a conventional wedding, it is important to inform yourself of what may not be included in your wedding package. There may be some added fees such as; notary fee, private dinner reception (without the other hotel guests crashing your party!), and a photographer to capture every memorable moment and the beauty Punta Cana provides. For more information about weddings in Punta Cana visit www.puntacana-information-guide.com Yet keep in mind, if youre someone whos needs to be in control at all times and you live by your watch; a Caribbean wedding is not for you. Island time is not for everyone. Locals tend to move at a much slower, relaxed pace than the rest of the world. So be prepared for some possible delays such as the judge showing-up late or a two oclock wedding being postponed to four oclock. Remember to remind yourselves that youre in one of the most beautiful beach destinations in the world. Sit back relax, what will be will be, or better yet have another Pina Colada! Nancy Koluzs is the editor of the Punta Cana Information Guide http://www.puntacana-information-guide.com a travel guide offering pertinent information ranging from tips and contacts to Caribbean recipes. Nancy and her family have been to Punta Cana scores of times and know more about the region than most of the locals do, their passion for the area definitely shines through in their website. Lonely? 7 Tips That Will Change Your Life

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Terry Hernon MacDonald Are you lonely? Have no dates? Few friends? Do you find yourself spending weekends with annoying relatives who imply you’re a loser because you’re not married? Or, worse, do you spend most of your time with another single woman who’s convinced that all the good men are taken, dead, or in jail? You, my friend, are in a rut. Fortunately, there’s a way out. And it doesn’t matter what you look like, whether you hold an MFA or a GED, or where you live. Here’s my 7-point plan for making new friends, attracting the opposite sex, and transforming your life: 1) Change begins from the inside out. Change yourself, and the world changes, too. For example, if you lack self-confidence, people pick up on that. Ever notice how the woman who can’t say no is the one everyone dumps on? Or how the chubby woman who feels great about herself always has a boyfriend? Another benefit of cultivating confidence and self-esteem: Users, abusers, manipulators, and complainers will quickly fade out of your life. Fun, helpful, loyal, and positive people will replace them. To facilitate a great self-image, look in the mirror and say, “I love and approve of myself.” Say this out loud while you’re in the shower and while you’re stirring the spaghetti sauce (just don’t say it out loud to the clerk at Starbucks). Say it one hundred times a day, and you’ll soon feel a shift in yourself. Then your world will shift, too. 2) Get out of the house. I don’t care whether you join a book club, a bowling league, or a political movement, you must escape your comfort zone (otherwise known as a rut). Go where likeminded people will likely show up. After a widowed friend of mine joined a support group for people who lost loved ones to cancer, he made a wonderful new friend who recently became his wife. 3) Ask open-ended questions. If you’re shy and don’t know what to say, ask people about themselves. Everybody loves a listener! 4) Never complain, never explain. “The surest route to unpopularity is to talk about your ailments,” my mother used to say. Sure, moaning about the corn on your big toe may elicit polite murmurs of sympathy, but it won’t make you any friends. Avoid lengthy explanations, as well. If you got stuck in traffic on your way to your book club meeting, for example, apologize but don’t go on and on about it. 5) Smile. My brother claims that I didn’t start smiling until I turned 23. The sad thing is, he’s right. I once feared smiling made me look over-eager and easily fooled, and it definitely influenced circumstances in my life. Once I understood how smiling put other people at ease and conveyed approachablility, I made a conscious effort to do it. If you’re not a smiler, start now. And be sure to show teeth! 6) Treat others as you would have them treat you. And if they don’t treat you as you would treat them, keep moving. 7) Be consistent. Use these tips daily. If you think they’re too easy to make a change, you’re wrong. Head into the bathroom now and start using the affirmation. Then follow through with the rest of the tips. Within 60 days you will be safely out your rut, have made a new friend or two, and perhaps even met a man who makes you laugh and considers your happiness his first priority. Get going! Phentermine - The Watchword for Weight Watchers

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Chris Read In today’s time, we want it all, and we want it quick, and when most of our professions require us to sell an image, having just the right weight becomes an increasingly important concern. The answer sometimes is as tiny as a pill, an appetite suppressant, known as Phentermine. Known the world over for its relatively quick and effective results, Phentermine is a quite a rage in the weight loss market, and for multiple reasons. It is a derivative of Amphetamine and thus proves to be an appetite suppressant. It works in close collaboration with Neurotransmitters in the brain. It helps counter the hunger signal sent out by the Neurotransmitters and thus cutting down on the appetite. It must be remembered though, that it proves to be more of a solution for those for whom weight loss is a medical issue, rather than a desired cosmetic change. Like almost all pharmaceuticals and drugs, Phentermine comes with a host of side effects too, some of the minor ones being dry mouth, unpleasant taste, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting. It is also imperative to remember that there are certain contraindications that need to be considered before you embark on a dosage. Some of these are: Agitation Allergy/ Hypersensitivity to other sympathomimetic amines, Atherosclerosis, Cardiovascular disease, Glaucoma, High blood pressure, Hyperthyroidism or a History of drug abuse. On the other hand, though, there are enough testimonials all over the internet to strengthen the belief in this pill. So if you have no time on your hands, and the extra pounds are harming you in more ways than you can imagine, buy cheap Phentermine at a host of online pharmacies, always ensuring to check for the FDA approval. Wedding Day Bliss Or Wedding Day Blues?

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Kathy Crawford Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life. Everyone knows planning a wedding can be difficult. If you search on the internet you’ll find many articles and planning books out there that make it seem like wedding planning is rocket science but it really isn’t. Do it yourself wedding planning can be easy if you are organized. One of the most exciting parts of wedding planning is sharing your happiness with family, friends and other guests. And the best place to start your wedding planning is by talking to friends and family about their wedding experiences. Wedding planning is crucial to the success of your day. The key to any wedding planning is making a checklist and following it in an organised fashion. The top thing on your checklist should be your wedding date. Without that there won’t be a wedding day. Other items that may be on your wedding checklist are, choosing a minister to officiate your ceremony, the wedding rings, the bride’s dress, who you want to be in your wedding, where the wedding will be held, invitations, the reception, flowers, music, photographer, wedding favors and more. If you plan on having an outdoor wedding you need to consider the time year or location so that it will not be too cold or rainy. Also, if your wedding is anywhere near the national average it will cost you or your parents around $3000. Typically, the wedding reception accounts for 50% or more of the total wedding package. This makes the RSVP on your invitations very important. The time leading up to your wedding day is a very special time but it will go very quickly. And the best part of all that comes from your wedding day is your honeymoon which brings us to a whole other subject for a future article. Case Study: The Golf Industry in Japan - A Well-Kept Secret to Successful Marketing

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Cameron Switzer While working on developing the world’s first global launch of a 100% biodegradable/compostable corn-based polymer fiber sock in 2005 I came across some very interesting information about the golf industry. For those of you not in this industry you may not be aware but apparently Japan is the most brutally competitive market in the world, for golf. Korea is a close second. Every company is constantly innovating, developing, refining, looking for that edge, attempting to eke out a little bit extra to gain the competitive advantage in order to take a greater part of market share. My client is a high-end golf club manufacturer. He is extremely innovative and always looking to develop new hot products to provide his customers. He does not hesitate to place a one-shot $30,000 1/3 page ad in the leading business newspaper that all of the CEOs, CFOs, COOs, etc. read every single day to learn about business and truly leading-edge product development. What he confided in me regarding a Japanese-marketing tactic is truly inspiring. I found out that there is a ranking system in the USA where every golf tournament statistics are presented showing the percent of golfers (in that tournament) using every single product in use at the tournament. A grand survey is prepared and distributed among the players, marketers, companies. They collect data and publish it like thus: “X% of golfers wear/use Brand Y products”. This information is culled by the Japanese golf-goods manufacturers and used as an amazing marketing tool in Japan. Here is how it works. “Shaft Co., Ltd” (an imaginary company) makes a new shaft, let’s call it “Shafted” and gives it out for free to all of the golfers at a tournament. As an example out of the 180 golfers on the tournament, 160 use the shaft and the other super pros (like Tiger Woods who have other contracts) don’t. They try it out. The statistics for that tournament are published. In there we would see that 89% of US Golfers use “Shafted Brand shafts”. “Shaft Co., Ltd”., takes those statistics back to Japan and turns them into a marketing bonanza. They take out a 1/3 page ad in the Japan Economics Newspaper (Nihon Keizai Shimbun) that is read by all of the company executives in Japan. The ad claims that 88.9% of US pro course golfers use “Shafted Brand” shafts. The ad runs and it hits the market. When the Japanese market sees this information, they assume that 88.9% of all golfers in Japan use this shaft. Since the USA is the “hotspot” for golf, where only the best products are used by the pros, the market here in Japan makes the leap to the assumption, “if it is good for about 90% of US golfers, it HAS to be good for us!”. Here you need to understand that Japan emulates the USA in golf. Even the pro golfers here look to the trends in the USA and try to follow them religiously. Once this happens, everyone goes out and buys “Shafted Brand” clubs and this shaft goes from an unknown to Number One in the industry, overnight. My client is designing a special sock to give golfers an edge over the others. This is how my introduction to the biodegradable sock ties into this story. In addition to the high-tech design of the socks he also plans to use this marketing technique to dramatically improve the sales of his socks in Japan and strategically place his product ahead of the pack. Because Japanese uses a lot of “fuzzy language” it is possible to create a marketing plan in such a way to capitalize on this cultural aspect and target the mass market. When you want to conduct successful business in Japan, you need to understand more than just the language to get over the many hidden hurdles. Good luck! Cameron Switzer Intrmarket Solutions Kamishii-mura, Fukui, Japan Cameron has lived and worked in Japan for over 15 years. Originally a researcher and educator he has a penchant for details and a natural born flair for communication “soul to soul”. His extensive experience in the culture, coupled with language fluency and a deep understanding of Japanese ethics, morals and thought processes has allowed him to develop a special niche market in the business world. While working to develop a global presence for a titanium material, parts & accessories distributor for the global eyeglass industry for 5 years, Cam saw the difficulties small/medium sized companies were having trying to expand their businesses outside of Japan. He decided they needed help. Ounce of Prevention

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Arlie MacGregor To love, honour and cherish, easy words to say during a fancy ceremony, but how many people actually think about what it is that theyre saying? How many people commit to living those words? Complacency is one of the biggest enemies of any relationship, and it takes constant effort with both parties to avoid it and stay happily-ever-after. Once an affair has occurred, its far too easy to lay the blame on the guilty party, but in truth, it takes two to tango, or in this case, three. The causes and reasons behind affairs arent always black and white, just different shades of grey. As someone whos been on both sides of the fence, I offer the following suggestions for keeping a healthy relationship going, and preventing an affair from happening in the first place. Communication is key: Its funny, we all know this, and we all swear up and down that we communicate with our significant others, but do we really? Paying someone lip service at the end of the day by asking how work was isnt communication, its merely exchanging pleasantries. Do you still make time to listen to each others hopes, dreams and aspirations? Do you still encourage and support each other, not just by being there, but with verbal and physical demonstrations? Ive often observed couples who claim to have good communication skills, only to see and hear them belittle, ridicule, ignore and undermine each other, none of which promotes a healthy atmosphere. Is it any surprise then, when one spouse finds someone else who will bolster their self esteem? Set aside some time each day thats personal time, for just the two of you. Time without having the kids running underfoot, doing chores, or cooking dinner and make a conscious attempt to really listen to what the other has to say. If you dont make the effort to stay in tune with your partner, you run the risk of growing away and apart from each other, until one day you find yourself sitting across the table from a total stranger who you just happen to be married to. There are a million things you can do to have some quality time with each other, like walking the dog, going for an ice cream cone, or taking in a dinner theatre. Stay spontaneous; share a hobby or common interest. No matter what, keep in mind that this person is supposed to be your best friend, not just furniture with a paycheck. Holidays are important too, even if theyre just a weekend here and there. As the years go by, we lose our definition of being a couple, and instead become parents, partners, co-workers, room mates, anything but the lovers we started out as. Get a babysitter, cajole a relative, do whatever it takes, but get away from the house, the bills and the kids; make time to rediscover and appreciate each other. Mirror, mirror on the wall: Remember when you first started dating your sweetie, and even the first few years of your relationship? Remember spending hours fussing over your hair, picking out just the right clothes, agonizing over that hormonal blossom on your face just before it was time to go out? And why? Because you wanted to be attractive. Unfortunately, as time marches on, this also takes a backseat. Theres a pervasive attitude of I dont need to go through all that anymore because Ive got him/her. You couldnt be more wrong with that train of thought. Physical attraction is just as important 30 years later as it was 30 minutes into the relationship. Granted, pregnancies, genetics and/or illness dont always play in our favour, but theres still no reason for not trying to work with what youve got. As an example, a woman whos kept herself trim, healthy and who tries to look her best might be tempted to look elsewhere if her partner has become a human sloth with a beer belly, 3 days of facial growth and poor hygiene while he watches the tube in his jockey shorts. By the same token, a male whos kept himself in good shape might have a hard time cozying up to someone whos been layering on the pounds as though there were a famine around the corner, keeping her hair in an androgynous crew cut, and competing with him for body hair growth. Its vitally important that through the years, you continue to pay attention to how you look to your partner. Not only will it keep their interest up, itll keep you feeling good about yourself as well. Keep the home fires burning: Nothing will kill a relationship faster than sexual incompatibility or disinterest. While sex isnt the only reason that people step outside their relationships, its a major proponent, and often, the only one thats acknowledged. When we think of our significant other betraying us, the first thing that springs to mind is a lack of control over an overactive libido. It cant be stressed enough that sexual intimacy is crucial in a healthy relationship. Its what makes us feel desired, attractive, and on a physical level, loved. To be denied on a constant basis makes us feel rejected, we take it personally, and that spills over into everyday life. Talking to different couples over the years, Im amazed by the numbers who have put sex on the back burner, something they put up with just to keep their partner happy. You cant be serious, its the middle of the day, and I dont feel like getting dressed all over again or Ive had my kids, I dont need to do THAT anymore or even worse, He knows not to bother me again this month, Ive marked it on the calendar (and yes, I really have heard these and worse). Its these same spouses that cry foul when their honey finds someone who is willing to share themselves, and really, thats what sexual intimacy in a relationship is all about, sharing oneself with another. Its not all about frequency though. It takes a certain level of creativity to keep it from getting stale. One cant possibly do the same thing with the same person for 40 years and still be excited by it. Read up on different techniques, try an unusual setting, introduce a few toys, or splurge on some lingerie. Strive to keep it fresh and interesting. Even revert back once in a while, play at being teens all over again in the backseat of your car on a dark road. There are a million different things you can do to spice things up, and the best part is that are no losers in this game. All too often, marriage becomes not a declaration of love eternal, but one of possession and ownership. One or both partners have ceased making their partner feel cherished, desired, wanted, and loved. Even so, theres a pervasive Okay, maybe I dont pay enough attention to him/her, but no one else can have them cause theyre MINE. However, fidelity and longevity arent things to be assumed, they have to be earned. You have to make the effort to constantly and consistently reaffirm your commitment and devotion to your partner, on all levels. Anything less leaves your relationship vulnerable to erosion and eventual collapse. Bikini Wax

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Jennifer Bailey It is summer time and its time to reach out for the bikinis to make one look cool, sassy and elegant at the same time all the while drawing attention from the public. To go with the bikinis what is essential is hair free and smooth skin. This will require a bikini wax. It is the most popular method of leg hair reduction. Bikini wax is popular among the women today. To get rid of the unwanted hair that is visible while wearing a bikini bottom what one needs to do is to get a bikini wax. The process involves the use of hot wax to get rid of unwanted pubic hair. The process can be convenient, quick and effective but very painful. What one needs to make sure while getting a bikini wax done is to get the wax done at a salon run by professionals. Doing so would ensure a gentle and safe hair removal. If one is weak hearted it is best not to make an appointment for a bikini wax because the pain is too much to bear for the faint hearted. If one has to go for a wax it is best to go at a time when the pain threshold is at its highest. When going in for a bikini wax fix an appointment with ones beautician who is well experienced at waxing because the area is the most sensitive and if not done in a professional and hygienic way one is sure going to have to suffer the results. Discover Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Rodger Cresswell Can you smell your way to good health? There are many people who now think or are sure that you can. The planet is filled with natural fragrances that many of us take for granted. However there are many who believe that the right natural fragrances can help you feel better, work better and, best of all, relax! It could be the fresh smell that precedes a rainstorm, the smell of freshly ground coffee or the smell of your favourite flower; natural aromas are all around us and influence our disposition. An excellent example is the trick of having bread baking or fresh coffee on the go as you show a prospective buyer around your house. Much work and research has been done to see if the power of smell can help in the treatment of many common ailments. Is that possible? Put a good quality lavender essential oil onto an aromatherapy diffuser or hot stone vaporiser, close your eyes and feel yourself relax and drift off into another world. Our bodies have worked in close unison with Mother Nature for so many years and maybe she knows something we are only just beginning to understand. There are more than 150 oils that have distinctive therapeutic, psychological and physiological properties that are reputed to improve health and prevent illness. All aromatherapy oils have their own unique healing and antiseptic properties. Some oils are antiviral, others relieve pain, some are relaxing and yet others can even be used as anti-depressants. Like all alternative treatments, aromatherapy is not something you experiment with without attaining some knowledge. For example, mentioned above is vaporising lavender essential oil and enjoying the soporific effect. It may be tempting to massage the lavender essential oil straight from the bottle onto your temples or foreheads. However, good quality lavender oil is very concentrated and that strength on the skin is likely to cause an unpleasant reaction. It is only recently that the advice has been given to mix Lavender and Tea Tree essential oils with a carrier oil before massaging into the skin. Previously it was considered safe to put either of these essential oils directly onto the skin but there have been cases of allergic reactions. Research by reading articles, books and e-books by experienced practitioners. The time will be well spent as there may be benefits to you, your health and wellbeing. There is much to be discovered and enjoyed in the safe use of aromatherapy and essential oils.
