The Secret of How to Lose 5 Pounds in a Week

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Ian Robertson Are you losing at least one pound per week? If diet and exercise are made priorities then it should be completely feasible to lose at least a pound per week. It needs to be understood that a pound of bodyfat contains roughly 3500 calories and if one removes 500 excess calories a day then at least one pound will be lost until a goal weight is achieved. This doesnt take regular exercise into consideration which means more weight can be lost. As far as the diet is concerned, make sure you remove those 500 calories from superfluous food sources such as sodas which can be replaced with water or unsweetened tea. Thats easily 120-150 calories depending on the soda. Instead of fries or chips, go with steamed vegetables instead. Vegetables and fruit are recommended for two reasons: Not only do they have fewer calories due to the water content but they contain considerably more vitamins and minerals than the unnecessary junk. The diet facet is certainly more challenging than exercise in terms of fighting off the calories. While for most, exercise is the easier of the two, it is still a motivational challenge at times. Some days we are too busy, while other days simply leave us too tired. And while easier said than done, try not to fall into a rut like that. One of the best aspects of exercise is that it can serve as one-stop shopping in terms of calorie reduction. For instance, an hour of jogging burns up to 900 calories! However, remember to use weights as well because building muscle is what boosts the metabolism in the long-term. Alone, an hours worth of weight training will burn 500 calories but the metabolic boost you get is unique only to resistance training. Of course, one needs to remember to not only eat a nutritious protein and carbohydrate snack an hour after exercising but to eat enough calories throughout the day. Many, think starvation will lead to fat loss when exactly the opposite is true. The body must break down its own muscle tissue in an effort to maintain ones metabolism since not enough calories are being eaten. When calories are lacking, body fat is hoarded and metabolisms are slowed down in order to conserve energy due to the fight-or-flight response. Once a solid diet and exercise program has been established, removing 500 calories a day will become the healthy sidenote to an overall healthy lifestyle. Tanning Lotion is Common Sense in a Bottle

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

By Terry Price When it comes to avoiding burns, whether it is from a full day at the beach or a tanning bed session, a few commonsense precautions should be taken. If you have ever used a tanning bed before, you will know what an enjoyable experience it can be! Occasionally, you can end up with sore and burned skin, known as tanning bed burns. Regardless of the source of your burn, your skin will feel tender, and there is a chance of permanently damaging your skin as well. There are two common sources of burns from indoor tanning beds. It is from an overexposure to UV rays, or the tanning bed user has not applied enough protection against UV rays. The proper tanning bed lotion will give you this protection. Use only the best ones on the market, and you will find that for the most part burning will become nonexistent. A good lotion will actually stimulate production of melanin and when more melanin pigments are produced, it will allow you to enjoy your tanning bed experience longer. You will find also that most tanning lotions will have a built-in moisturizer that will help your skin keep its youthful and elastic look. Using a good tanning lotion will help you keep a vibrant healthy tan, without getting your skin too leathery. Use goggles in indoor tanning beds to protect your eyelids from burning. They are specially designed to give 100% protection against UV radiation. Common sense goes a long way and one of the first and simplest things you could do to protect yourself from overexposure to UV rays is to simply limit your time on the tanning bed. If you are a first-time user of a tanning bed, limit your first day to only a few minutes and gradually introduce yourself to the tanning process by increasing time increments progressively. Usually burns occur when people ignore safety warnings and precautions. But most of all, having an enjoyable tanning bed experience starts with just good old commonsense! Choosing a Music Technology Course for your Son or Daughter

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By David Mellor Music Technology is a popular subject at college and university. But how do you know whether you are choosing the RIGHT course for your child? Even in late teenage, children need parental help in choosing the right course to secure their future employment prospects. It is never a good idea to try and force your child to take a course in which they are not interested. They will either do badly or drop out. The consequences are totally negative. So if your child has expressed a preference for Music Technology, you should ensure that they choose the course that will benefit them most. There are two problems with colleges and universities that run Music Technology courses… Firstly, the reason why they run such courses is that they know they are popular. People don’t want to study math, physics, chemistry and English literature any more - they want a ’sexy’ subject. Or at least what they consider to be exciting. So colleges and universities offer Music Technology courses to fulfill that demand. Secondly, not all colleges and universities are staffed by people who really understand the industry. There is no ‘music technology’ industry as such. Ideally however, colleges and universities offering Music Technology as a subject would be staffed by people who had worked in recording studios, broadcasting, live sound, theater sound, perhaps film sound too. The problem however is that people who work in these industries at a high level are generally better paid than teachers and lecturers. So why would they move into education? Some do however. In the industries mentioned, it is common to work either very long hours, or to work shifts including night work. Some people therefore will move to education to achieve a better life/work balance. This is good, as long as they maintain contact with industry to keep their knowledge relevant and skills up to date. So these two factors are very important. Does the college or university have a commitment, or are they offering Music Technology as a fix for their finances? Do they have ex-industry staff - not people who couldn’t find success in the industry but the ones who have moved over to education for a good solid reason? Also it is relevant to enquire how long a college or university has been offering Music Technology courses. Some are very well established and well respected. If you were an ex-industry lecturer, that’s the kind of place you would want to work, rather than in some upstart college just doing it for the money. Remember, this is an important decision. Get it right and your son or daughter could have a firm foundation for their future career. Get it wrong, and it could mean years of wasted time at this important stage of life. Poor Money Management - “Australians’ Personal Money Management in a Shambles”

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Julian Thornton Sure Australia is renowned for its athletic prowess and excellence across a wide range of fields, however when it comes to personal money management, Aussies arent doing that great. Unfortunately Australians are suffering from debt levels higher than most countries and our addiction to the plastic fantastic isnt doing us any favours either. Put simply, we have two main areas of weakness: we dont budget and we are becoming too addicted to credit cards. As dire as the situation may sound, there are things that we can all do to improve our financial lot, and Im going to share it all with you now! Fail to Budget, Fail to Live We Australians approach budgeting in the same way as we do dieting. Like bad credit, obesity is on the rise in Australia too, yet when it comes to the obesity cure and prevention (dieting and exercise), we simply procrastinate, lose motivation and give up! Its all too hard are common catchcries, and unfortunately the same can be said of budgeting. Most Australians dont stick to a household budget. Instead they will simply wait for pay day with eager (often hungry) anticipation and then as quickly as the money hits their bank accounts, it disappears. Where did all the money go? Most people dont even know, and this is because they dont budget! Failure to budget is really a failure to live. How many of us are suffering as a result of bad budgeting and poor financial management? Our lifestyle completely suffers, and we are miserable and limited due to a lack of money. If we budget, we can plan to live because well have money to live well. Budgeting is all about: Accounting for money in; Accounting for money out; Living within your means; Sticking to a savings plan; and Clearing debts. Most of the time, it is simply the discipline aspect we need help with, and it is at hand. Australians need to call bad credit mortgage experts like us if they feel budgeting is beyond them, because we will give them the expert advice and direction they need to ensure they develop a good budget and stick to it. Then they can secure a good home loan and enjoy the benefits of a financially stable future. Addicted to Credit Cards, Destined for Debt We live in a materialistic society, and daily we are bombarded with, Buy now, pay later messages. Our largest department stores are flogging interest-free schemes like they are going out of fashion, and those that can least afford the debt are accruing it by the thousands of dollars! In Australia, credit defaults are on the rise. In other words, people are skipping, missing or ignoring their credit card payments. Defaults in excess of $500 will appear on your Credit File, which can be all that stands between you and a loan. In addition, if you are determining how much you can afford to borrow on a home loan, for every $1000 of credit limit that you have, subtract $5000 from the possible amount you can borrow in a home loan. Take into consideration the fact that the average Australian now owes $2600 on their credit card (The Courier Mail, 4th January 2006), and that is a significant reduction in the amount you can borrow. Combine these facts with the reality that many people pay interest in excess of 12% on each credit card and only pay the minimum repayment, and its clear that unless there is real improvement in money management, Australians are just going to sink into a darker hole of debt. The key to managing your credit cards is to kill credit card debt. If you have multiple credit cards, get rid of the high interest one first, and then cancel it. Make sure you cancel it so you know the card really is dead and wont come back to life. Systematically pay your credit debts and once you do this, either cancel the card or reduce the limit to something manageable so you dont fall into the hole again. Finally, only use the card when you absolutely need to, for example if you have a direct debit that requires a credit card, or if you are making a hotel booking. Do not indulge in excessive, credit card spending. Chances are you dont need those items you are going to purchase anyway, so avoid it. Do Something Today! Your financial problems wont go away if you ignore them. Sticking your head in the sand will only sink you further into the dark hole of debt. Take affirmative action today and turn your debt situation into a positive one. Its the opportunity to pursue the financially successful future that awaits all who pursue it diligently. Scholarships & Schools 101: Getting and Keeping References

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Morgan James You want to get into the best schools, and pay for your education, but to do both you need references. You begin applying for schools and scholarships, until you realize that you need to get 3 reference letters for each scholarship or application. What next? Finding Referees In order to find referees, you need to determine how many references you need. Do you need 18 reference letters? Do you need 7 online forms filled out? Do you simply need the contact information for 3 references? Once you have established how many references you will need, you can figure out how many people will meet that need. Often, to get 30 or more references, you will only need 3 or 4 people. Once your referee writes you the first letter, the hard work is done. It often doesnt take too long to have your references tailored for each application. It is also important to establish what type of reference you need. Do you need to have all academic references from teachers and professors? Or can you have a few references from community sources? Take this into consideration when planning your references. Asking for References You now need to ask for references. When you ask for a reference, be specific. Say, Will you please be my reference for my application to X college? I need you to fill in an electronic application by November 12th. Ask someone that you trust to give you a good reference, and someone that will be organized enough to complete the package properly. You dont want your application to suffer because of another persons mistakes. Reference Packages Your referees are busy people. You need to make their lives easier by organizing as much of it as you can for them. You can do everything short of writing the letter itself. If you want them to do more than one reference for you, make it easy on them by giving them a sheet of paper with the references you need by when. Make sure that each one is clearly labeled with specific instructions (for instance: you might need some in duplicate and some in triplicate). If your reference is submitting the letter themselves, then give them a stamped, addressed envelope. If your reference is returning the letter to you, make sure that you pick up the envelope when you say you will. Be sure to have them sign across the seal! Your references want to write a good letter. Help them out by giving them a cheat sheet. On this sheet you should explain that you are jogging their memories. Write how long you have known them, what courses you have taken with them, and any accomplishments that you achieved with their help. Include your resume or curriculum vitae in your reference package. You want to keep everyone up-to-date on your accomplishments. You should also include any essays that you had to write for your scholarship or university application. This means that your referees will be able to make direct mention of your future plans and how well-suited you are to the program. Organizing your References You need to keep master list of what applications are due when. You will want to have on this list who your references are for each subject. Check off each reference after you have received it or know that it has been sent. Give your references time to write the letter. You dont want them to write a rushed letter. Give yourself time to finish the application. Letting them know early means that you can give them a deadline that is a few days before the actual deadline. This will ensure that all of your materials get where they need to be on time. Thanking your References Each person who writes you a reference should get a thank you card. This card will explain what you have chosen to do. Explain what school you are going to, what scholarships you have received, and acknowledge your referees part in the process. Even if you did not get what you applied for, let your reference know. For extra-helpful references, you might even consider getting a box of chocolates or flowers. Thanking your referees keeps them happy. If they are happy, then they will write you letters later when you need it. You never know when you will need another reference. And, who knowsone day you might be writing reference letters yourself! Morgan James is the editor of The Guide to Student Loans.
